Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

 

 

 

After years of going without a conference affiliation, all but a handful of the athletic teams of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High school finally found a home this week when the Eastern Athletic Conference voted unanimously to accept the Vineyard into its ranks.

The principals and athletic directors of the Eastern Athletic Conference voted without dissent on Wednesday to accept the Vineyard as the newest member of the four-school athletic conference. The vote took place at the conference’s regular meeting held at Somerset High School.

Spokesmen for MassHighway said this week that a plan to close Beach Road for six months to replace the Big Bridge and Little Bridge will not happen.

Last month, the Acton-based construction firm MIG Corporation filed a detour proposal with MassHighway requesting that Beach Road along Joseph Sylvia State Beach be closed from the start of construction until Memorial Day.

The news came as a surprise to Oak Bluffs and Edgartown officials, who knew about the planned bridge work but not about the plan to close the road.

Although the matchup between the Vineyard football team and visiting Cape Cod Tech team last Friday under the lights at the regional high school was billed as the most important game of the season, in the end it wasn’t even close.

The Vineyarders scored early and often against their conference rival, and won easily 35-8, in the process taking one step closer to punching their ticket to the playoffs.

Two Island men accused of robbing a 79-year-old employee of the Capawock theatre in Vineyard Haven while he was dropping off receipts for the evening in a nearby overnight bank deposit box were indicted by a Dukes County grand jury last week and were arraigned in Dukes County Superior Court.

Michael Ellis, 20, of Edgartown, and Brett Geddis, 18, of Tisbury, both entered pleas of not guilty before the Hon. John C. Cratsley, an associate justice of the superior court. Both are charged with unarmed robbery of a person age 60 or older as well as assault and battery.

An Oak Bluffs petition that aims to rescind $400,000 in Community Preservation Act funding for the Bradley Square renovation project has netted the required number of signatures and the question will go on the warrant for the next special town meeting.

Town clerk Deborah deBettencourt Ratcliff said this week that she confirmed 106 signatures on the petition circulated by Donald Muckerheide.
