Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

It was a cold day for Nantucket in more ways then one Saturday, as the surging Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School football team easily defeated the once mighty Whalers by a score of 43-22 in a game not nearly as close as the final score indicated to take the Island Cup for the sixth year in a row.

Vineyarders coach Donald Herman emptied his bench at the start of the second half and the Whalers got two touchdown passes late from quarterback Chris Welch to make the score respectable, but the outcome of the game was never in doubt.

In the latest chapter of what is already a prolonged application process, supporters and opponents of the controversial Bradley Square renovation project emerged last week from nearly two months of negotiations with a revised plan for the project. The changed plan, which now goes back before the Martha’s Vineyard Commission for fresh review, includes more on-site parking, smaller buildings and one less affordable housing unit.

After receiving a notice of noncompliance from the state confirming that treated effluent is seeping to the surface at Ocean Park, the Oak Bluffs wastewater commission earlier this month voted to ban all new hookups to the town sewer system until the cause of the effluent problems is identified.

In the wake of a heroin bust in Vineyard Haven last Tuesday that led to the confiscation of nearly $70,000 in cash and illegal drugs and the arrest of six people — three from the same family — came warnings that heroin use is a serious problem on the Vineyard.

The Island community reacted to the arrests with shock, sadness and in some cases outrage in reader forums of both Island newspapers. Another reaction was surprise — not only about the amount of drugs seized and number of people arrested, but about the drug involved, heroin.

Six people — three from the same Vineyard Haven family — were arrested on felony drug charges earlier this week following one of the largest heroin busts in Island history.

Members of the Martha’s Vineyard Drug Task force executed a search warrant at the Garde home on Spring street in Vineyard Haven just after 6 p.m. Tuesday and seized nearly $70,000 in heroin, cash and other drugs. Officers arrested three members of the Garde family and three other suspects for alledgedly running a drug operation out of the home.

It is a chilly November evening; the sun has just dipped below the horizon and Mike McCarthy, quarterback for the Vineyarders football team, stands in back of the high school answering a reporter’s questions about this weekend’s Island Cup game.

Nearby a group of cheerleaders is spray-painting signs and posters with words of encouragement for the team. Some of the signs will be used to decorate the bedrooms of the starters and seniors on the football team; others may be brought over to Nantucket this weekend to cheer on the Vineyarders during the game.
