Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

A Siberian husky named Storm is in trouble again after getting loose and killing several chickens — although this time the canine has crossed town lines.

Just weeks after Tisbury selectmen permanently banned the dog owned by Ken and Nina Garde from town, he escaped from a temporary home in Oak Bluffs and once again went on a chicken-killing spree at a nearby farm.

The long-awaited West Tisbury town hall renovation will begin later this month.

The town hall will be closed at noon Sept. 18 and will reopen on Sept. 23 with offices relocated in trailers and the old library. All town offices will be closed between those dates. Anyone with questions may call executive secretary Jennifer Rand at 508-696-0102.

While the Bradley Square renovation project in Oak Bluffs continues to generate controversy before the town zoning board of appeals, another project just down the road that is similar in some ways is starting to generate some heat before the Martha’s Vineyard Commission.

Vineyard Haven resident Donald Muckerheide, a vocal opponent of the Bradley Square project over the past nine months, initially proposed a nine-unit, three-story housing project in a business-zoned district on Dukes County avenue, a few blocks away from the Bradley Square site.

After speculation and rumors bubbled through the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association in Oak Bluffs all summer about renovation work on the historic cottage at 5 Pease avenue, the facts surrounding the construction project began to surface this week.

What began as minor renovations to the cottage in the Camp Ground grew this spring, and a large portion of the building was demolished while the footprint was partially expanded, possibly in violation of a town bylaw that strictly regulates demolition.

The West Tisbury selectmen and town conservation commission on Wednesday differed briefly over a proposal to create a committee to oversee the cleanup of Mill Pond, the popular 2.5-acre waterway next to the town police station.

After receiving a petition from residents last year urging the appointment of a special committee to study Mill Pond and recommend changes, selectmen pushed for the creation of the panel and even started to recruit potential members, including several residents with backgrounds researching ponds and watersheds.

The bumpy road to approval for the Bradley Square project in Oak Bluffs was extended a little last Thursday when the town zoning board of appeals voted to reopen the public hearing following a groundswell of letters to town hall and requests for further testimony.

Board chairman Kris Chvatal opened the meeting — held at the town senior center before a packed audience — by announcing that he had consulted town counsel Ronald H. Rappaport about the sheer volume of correspondence relating to the project.
