Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

In what is fast becoming a recurring theme of the season, senior quarterback Mike McCarthy on Friday again led the Vineyard football team past Holbrook/Avon 28-14 in a non-league match on the road.

McCarthy scored three touchdowns on the ground to help improve the Vineyarders to 3-1 on the season.

For coach Donald Herman the win was a mixed bag. While he lauded some individual players on offense like McCarthy, he said the defense did not play to its full potential.

With little fanfare, the Martha’s Vineyard Commission on Thursday approved the color of the brick for the exterior of the new $42 million Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Prior to the vote, chairman Douglas Sederholm took aim at the coverage of the so-called brick issue in the Martha’s Vineyard Times, a weekly newspaper published in Vineyard Haven.

West Tisbury selectmen on Wednesday said they supported a zero tolerance policy for a Siberian husky who got loose earlier this year and killed chickens on two occasions in Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven.

The husky, whose name is Mussa, now lives in West Tisbury with her owner Rebecca Garde. And while there have been no incidents, animal control officer Joan Jenkinson issued strong words of caution about the dog to the selectmen this week.

Tisbury police this week arrested two young men and charged them with the robbery of a 79-year-old Capawock theatre employee who was dropping off receipts for the evening in a nearby overnight bank deposit box.

Michael Ellis, 20, of Edgartown was taken into custody on Tuesday and Brett Geddis, 18, of Vineyard Haven was taken into custody on Wednesday. Both are suspected of robbing George Buckley on the evening of Sept. 30.

The real estate market on the Vineyard had already begun to see a sharp downturn this year, and the recent collapse in global financial markets and turmoil on Wall Street certainly has not made things better.

Statistical evidence gathered from Banker and Tradesman online, which compiles real estate figures from sale documents, shows the Dukes County housing market is off sharply from last year, with sales down almost 15 per cent and prices off by more than nine per cent.

A longtime employee of the Capawock movie theatre, known to many as George the ticket man, was robbed by two unknown assailants Tuesday evening while dropping off receipts for the evening in a nearby overnight bank deposit box.

Tisbury police chief John Cashin said George Buckley, 79, of Lagoon Pond Road, was robbed around 8:35 p.m. by two young males as he approached the night deposit box at the Martha’s Vineyard Savings Bank branch at 65 Main street — about two blocks from the theatre.

Mr. Buckley was not injured in the attack.
