Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

Additional charges were brought this week against a West Tisbury school teacher who is accused of providing alcohol and pornographic materials to former students and hosting underage drinking parties at his home.

Daniel K. Johnson, 43, of Vineyard Haven was arraigned in Edgartown district court Tuesday on five new charges of furnishing alcohol to minors and one charge of disseminating obscene materials to a minor.

Fittingly, Tuesday’s meeting on plans to repair the crumbing town waterfront in Oak Bluffs took place at the same time as the Presidential Inauguration in Washington D.C., when Barack Obama spoke of the importance of rebuilding the nation’s roads, bridges and infrastructure.

The parallels were literal and figurative. Earlier this month the town applied for $4 million in federal assistance through Mr. Obama’s economic stimulus plan, aimed at providing a boost to the sagging economy while creating new jobs.

Two Island men with an interest in history and research spent Thanksgiving Day on a mission far from the dining room table this year. While friends and relatives were at home preparing turkey and pumpkin pie, Jay Segel and Ron Monterosso were in London meeting with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip to recount the story of a native American who traveled to England in the late 1700s to try and get his tribe's land back.

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys’ hockey team suffered two of its toughest losses of the season this week, losing 3-2 in the closing minutes Friday to old rival Han-over, and then losing 4-1 to a top Division I team from Framingham at home Saturday.

Coach Matt Mincone said his team actually played better in the more lopsided 4-0 loss to Framingham than they did against Hanover the night before.

The coach said the Vineyarders played flat and uninspired hockey against Hanover in a game they easily could have won.

Neighbor complaints about singing and music classes held at the West Tisbury branch of the Fellowship of Christians and Universities and Schools (FOCUS) could lead to a formal review by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission of whether the youth ministry violated its conditions of approval from 13 years ago.

An engineering report for Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs concludes that years of soggy conditions and flooding can be traced to failing septic grids, storm water runoff and a poorly functioning irrigation system.

Prepared by the engineering firm of Stearns & Wheler in response to a notice of noncompliance issued by the State Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) on Sept. 22, the report was due by Jan. 22. State DEP spokesmen visited the park in late August and found flooding and treated effluent seeping to the surface.
