Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

With all eyes on government budgets this year, the Martha’s Vineyard Commission last Thursday unanimously approved a $1.17 million budget for fiscal year 2010. The budget represents an 8.8 per cent reduction in overall spending from last year and an increase in town assessments of just under one per cent.

The commission’s budget for fiscal year 2009 was $1.28 million. Town assessments will increase a bit due to a reduction in state and federal grants of about $112,000.

A handful have gone out of business altogether.

Outerland nightclub, which closed last November, is one.

Longtime Oak Bluffs selectman Roger Wey said this week he will not seek reelection in April.

Mr. Wey, who has been a selectman since 1994 and has served a total of eight terms over 21 years, told the Gazette he decided not to run after much consideration. “I thought about it a long time, and the decision didn’t come easily,” Mr. Wey said. “But in the end, I just decided it was the right time to hang it up.”
