The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School has announced its honor roll for the first quarter of the 2012-2013 academic year.

Twelfth grade high honors: Nicholas Costello, Amy Fligor, Alice Greene, Fionnuala Howell, Alayna Hutchinson, Kyle Joba-Woodruff, Kent Leonard, Clara Maynard, Jack O’Malley, Katherine Smith, Katherine Stewart and Kylee Willoughby.

Never mind building a better mousetrap. Students in the regional high school’s December engineering challenge were concerned with the cats.

Participants in the monthly meet-up work in teams of two or three to complete a design challenge in 45 minutes. The December challenge asked students to build a functional shovel using metals and rivets. Competitors then had to scoop kitty litter, carry it across the room and deposit it into a container. The shovel that transported the most pounds of kitty litter won.

The march to the postseason continued this week with split results; the boys’ basketball team secured an easy victory on Tuesday while the girls took a hard-fought loss. Both basketball squads need just one more win to clinch a spot in the postseason tournament. Meanwhile, the fledgling swim team, hampered by illness and injury, hosted Sacred Heart in a close meet on Monday, but ultimately came up short.
