The All-Island School Committee approved an 8.8 per cent increase in the superintendent’s budget for the 2014 fiscal year.
The committee voted 10-2, with Roxanne Ackerman of Aquinnah and Jeffrey (Skipper) Manter of West Tisbury opposing.
In his presentation to the committee last month, superintendent James H. Weiss admitted that the budget jump was steep.
“The budget increase is significantly higher than I would have liked,” he said at the meeting.
The Martha’s Vineyard Youth Leadership Initiative (MVYLI) is pleased to announce that the ACT College Test is being offered for the first time on Martha’s Vineyard. The test will be administered at the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School on Saturday, Dec. 8., beginning at 8 a.m. The ACT Test is an alternative to the SAT college test. ACT components include sections on English, math, reading, science and writing (optional). Students can take either the SAT or ACT or both exams; nearly all colleges accept both tests.
Honk is a particular sort of theatrical mash-up that combines a contemporary retelling of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Ugly Duckling with a score that leans heavily to Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. The show first premiered in London and in 2000 won an Olivier Award for Best New Musical (the British equivalent of the Tony award).
The West Tisbury School is going to England — well, with your help they are. On Sunday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the school is holding an all-you-can-eat pancake fundraiser at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. The pancakes come with a sundae bar of toppings: chocolate chips, blueberries, sprinkles, gluten-free options.

Mr. McCarthy gave his annual report on SAT scores to the high school district committee on Monday night.
On average, Vineyard students performed better than their state peers in all areas except math, where they were behind by five points, Mr. McCarthy said.
Tonight, Nov. 9, the Tisbury fourth graders along with IMP will perform two musical fairy tales — Bears Beware! Goldilocks is in your town! and Waking Sleeping Beauty —
a fairy’s tale.
During the last six weeks the fourth graders worked together to create the scenery, props, musical numbers, set changes, costumes, sound equipment and acting.
