What if, in one evening, you could be blessed by Godfather of Soul, disciplined by Sergeant Pepper, get some Satisfaction, sail the Sloop John B. and Feel Like a Natural Woman? Would you do it?

The first time I visited New England, my family came to see cousins who had moved to Montpelier, Vt. It was early October, and on one of the first days of our trip we headed to the farmers’ market in the middle of town.

Each farm stand held wooden crates overflowing with the most amazing variety of apples I had ever seen, in many shades of red, brown, yellow and orange, and in all shapes and sizes. These were not the Red Delicious, Yellow Delicious and Granny Smiths I was used to eating at home — there were Beacons, Idareds, Jonagolds, Gravensteins and more.

Bully. Target. Bystander. Hero.

The vocabulary words took on greater meaning for elementary school students at the Edgartown School on Thursday morning as they watched eight junior high students in the IMP theater program present Assertions, a series of monologues on the topic of bullying.

On Tuesday morning, a group of high school IMP players performed a similar piece for a middle school audience.

Over a period of eight months IMP for Kids went into the Edgartown School’s health classes and used improv theatre games, discussions and writing prompts to gather the students’ thoughts about bullying in their school. Writer and director Donna Swift then took the student’s writings and stories and created two scripted shows; one for a middle school audience featuring high school IMP actors, the other for an elementary audience featuring middle school IMP actors.

Last Wednesday, 60 students walked into the newly-renovated West Tisbury School kitchen, chatting and giggling while they waited in line for their hot lunches. The scents of tomato sauce and garlic filled the cafeteria, while head cook Jenny Devivo bustled in the kitchen, feverishly slicing up cheese and pepperoni pizzas.
