Saturday brought a mixed bag of results for Vineyard sports teams with the basketball squads splitting their matches against Bishop Feehan. The girls’ squad suffered a narrow 78-70 loss while the boys' team came away with a 54-46 win.

On Saturday, Jan. 26, Falmouth Academy will host its annual scholarship exam. The top four scorers on the exam will receive $3,000 scholarships for their first year at Falmouth Academy.

The day will also include a student panel discussion and faculty forum. Guests will have the chance to discuss the academic, social and extracurricular life of the school with students.

The scholarship exam is optional. Falmouth Academy also has an extensive need-based financial aid program that is independent of the exam.

Regional high school English department chairman Dan Sharkovitz has been featured in the fall 2012 edition of The New England Association of Teachers of English professional journal, The Leaflet. Mr. Sharkovitz’s article, On Anarchy and the Teaching of English, explores the importance of helping teachers use methods of curriculum and lesson development that transcend canned curriculum templates and standardizations. The article defends the value and efficacy of allowing teachers the freedom to develop lessons in responsible and innovative ways.

This week Adult and Community Education (ACE MV) begins its winter course offerings. Many of the courses include college credit and thanks to the MV Family Center, all Thursday evening ACE MV classes at the regional high school include free childcare.

Cape Cod Community College (CCCC) is offering PSY 101-67: General Psychology through ACE MV. This three credit course is required for nursing and many health programs and meets the social/behavioral science requirement for associate degree concentrations. The class begins Thursday, Jan. 31.

Eighth-graders Caroline Roddy and Ava Thors will join Gov. Deval Patrick and students from across the commonwealth on Saturday, Jan. 26 for the community service initiative Project 351. Caroline, a student at the West Tisbury school, and Ava, a student at the Edgartown School, were selected by superintendent of Vineyard schools James Weiss to participate in the day of service. Project 351’s mission is to promote the values of kindness, compassion, commitment, humility and generosity of spirit through the positive example of eighth grade ambassadors.
