The boys’ basketball team rebounded from a tough one-point loss on Friday in their second game of the weekend as they defeated visiting Lexington 53-46 on Sunday afternoon. Senior Liam Weston had a standout game for the Vineyarders, shooting 78 per cent from the field en route to 16 points.
For Ilikea Scott, a nursing program on Martha’s Vineyard could mean a way to live and work on an Island she loves without the 4:30 a.m. wake-up calls.
In order to pursue a nursing degree at Cape Cod Community College, Ms. Scott recalled Tuesday, she would be on the 6 a.m. ferry to get to class by 8 a.m. She kept cars both on-Island and off, and worked 40 to 60 hours a week while juggling her course load.
The Vineyard girls’ hockey team continued a solid showing in league play this week, picking up two wins to move to a 5-3 record. They are 4-2 in the Southeastern Massachusetts Girls Hockey League after defeating opponents Scituate and Hanover.

League play begins this week for three teams, with boys’ basketball and boys’ hockey facing two of their toughest opponents of the season in home matchups. Basketball takes on Eastern Athletic Conference rival Bishop Feehan on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., while hockey plays Coyle and Cassidy Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

With the new year come new opportunities on the Vineyard: Cape Cod Community College announced this week that it will begin offering a nursing program on the Island in 2013.
Responding to a need on the Island for more and better-trained health care professionals, the college will offer a program starting in the fall aimed at enabling licensed practical nurses to become registered nurses. Registered nurses are able to perform a wider range of healthcare functions, but need an associate’s degree in nursing.
