Eighteen Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School students and their seven chaperones landed in Rome on April 8. The annual eighth grade trip was inaugurated in 2002 and continues to be led by Charter School Social Studies teacher, Jonah Maidoff. During the 11-day visit, the students spent time in Rome, Florence, the Tuscan countryside and San Giovanni V’al D’Arno where they met up with their pen pals, Italian students of the Instituto Comprensivo Marconi.
The Tisbury School has announced its honor roll for the third quarter of the 2012-2013 academic year. Eighth grade high honors: Elias Fhagen-Smith, Benjamin Nadelstein and Ashley Wood. Eighth grade honors: Alexandra Barlett, Amanda Bernard, Robson Borges, Monica Carroll, David Caseau, Justine Cassel, Alison Daigle, Renee Goodale, Emma Kristal, Colbeck Leuenberger, Patricia Oliveira, David Packer, Ava Petricone and Jenna Santos.
The Oak Bluffs School has announced its honor roll for the second quarter of the 2012-2013 academic year. Eighth grade high honors: Taber Caron, Lily Davey, Aivaras Gedvilas, Andrea Guyther, Emma Hall, Julia Hart, Danielle Hopkins, Julia Levesque, Nayson Peres, James Robinson, Colby Scarsella, Sarah Thomas, Liam Weiland and Eva Wilson.
Each month, regional high school students will be signing up to compete in a monthly engineering meet. At the meet students will be issued a design challenge, and will work in teams of two to three to meet that challenge. After 45 minutes, the designs will be evaluated, and the meet winners will be determined.
The February challenge was to create a water wheel that would turn the most times in response to a stream of water. The number of revolutions in a set time was measured to determine the winner. The following teams were winners:
As we wait for the first crops of the new growing season to appear in school gardens, Island Grown Schools’ Harvest of the Month program celebrates winter squash, one of the best storage crops to help sustain us through the long months between fall’s bounty and the first crops of spring.
