Stela Arrives
Ena Thulin and Plamen Dunchev of West Tisbury announce the birth of a daughter, Stela Plamenova Duncheva, born on Jan. 1, 2011, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Stela weighed 7 pounds at birth.
Dean’s List
Justin Kane, of Edgartown, has been named to the dean’s list at Suffolk University in Boston. He is the son of Kimberly and Richard Kane.
Hostel Award
The Martha’s Vineyard Hostel was named Most Efficient in Hostelling International New England’s Best Hostel Awards for 2010. Awards were based on more than 77,000 customer ratings and reports of 1,800 hostels worldwide.
The Vineyard hostel, located on the Edgartown-West Tisbury Road, was noted for the helpfulness of the staff and their need to make sure that everyone got the most out of their stay.
Dr. David Lowenthal, a boyhood visitor to Chilmark, was recently awarded the 2010 Forbes Prize for conspicuous service to conservation given annually by the Council of the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works. The award, presented in Istanbul, Turkey, honors Edward Waldo Forbes, emeritus director of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University.
Lt. Alexander B. Baynes, son of Leslie and Judy Baynes of Edgartown, recently graduated first in his class from the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif. He was awarded the Navy League Award for the Highest Academic Achievement.
Lieutenant Baynes, an engineering duty officer, chose for his thesis research on the efficacy of meta-materials and transformational optics to defend against high-energy electromagnetic beams.
Holiday Raffle Winners
Three lucky shoppers won a combined $850 in prizes from the Tisbury Business Association holiday raffle. Ken Lewis of Brookline won $500, Rose Gudrun of Vineyard Haven won $250, and Joan and Peter Kumpitch of Edgartown won $100.
