Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

After qualifying for a berth in the U.S. Amateur Open, a tournament that has been won by the likes of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, Island golfer Tony Grillo shot a disappointing 81 in the second round of match play last week, leaving him cut out of the following rounds of competition.

Grillo, 19, shot a two-day total of 158 — 18 over par — at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

Hoping to guard against an outbreak or worse of the H1N1 virus among young people this winter, a group that includes town health agents, the Vineyard Nursing Association and school leaders is moving forward with a plan to vaccinate the Island student population against the virus known as swine flu.

Members of the group have been meeting weekly to finalize a plan to distribute vaccine to the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and the five Island elementary schools.

It’s unclear who, exactly, was the first to camp out in front of Deon’s Restaurant on Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs early Tuesday evening, hoping to spot President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. And it wasn’t clear, even among those there, where the idea that the President was coming even started.

“The Secret Service was in there today,” said one onlooker, wearing a Bo-bama T-shirt, in honor of the First Dog.

To compare the Vineyard vacations of former President Clinton and current President Obama all you have to do is stop in an Island ice cream parlor. Once there, you will probably find a picture hanging on the wall of the former President eagerly peering over the counter to view the lineup of flavors, chatting with patrons or munching on an ice cream cone.

Draft legislation backed by Gov. Deval Patrick has again placed the Vineyard front and center in the statewide push to build large-scale wind farms on land and at sea, sparking some concern here that the rush to adopt clean energy technologies could come at the expense of fishing grounds, scenic views and the Island’s unique powers to regulate development through the Martha’s Vineyard Commission.
