There was a noticeable feeling of loss around the Vineyard this week.
“I can’t believe we’re not playing Nantucket this weekend,” one man lamented Monday while waiting for a haircut at Bert’s barber shop in Vineyard Haven. “What is the world coming to?”
For the first time in nearly 50 years, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard will not play the Island Cup football game this weekend, one of the most celebrated and storied traditions for both Islands that was cancelled this year for financial reasons.

Oak Bluffs selectmen unanimously approved an application to alter the premises over Danny Quinn’s Pub, allowing Mark Wallace to move forward with plans to create a banquet hall facility that could accommodate large events such as weddings, dances and balls.
Selectmen agreed to sign off on an application that will be sent to the Alcohol Beverage Control Commission (ABCC). Under state law any establishment that serves alcohol is required to make an application to the ABCC any time they make substantive changes to the premises.
Islanders will get a chance tomorrow morning to learn first-hand about the four Democratic candidates looking to fill the Massachusetts seat in the U.S. Senate that was left vacant when longtime Massachusetts Sen. Edward M. Kennedy died in August.
A candidates forum will be held tomorrow morning at the Howes House in West Tisbury from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. None of the candidates is expected to attend, although each will send a representative. At press time yesterday, it was still unclear who would attend the forum on behalf of each candidate.
Two men were arrested on felony drug charges on Tuesday as they were stepping off the ferry in Vineyard Haven, the latest in a series of major drug busts over the past year involving suspects either caught selling drugs here or trying to bring large amounts of heroin to the Vineyard.
The Martha’s Vineyard Drug Task Force, working in conjunction with the Tisbury and Massachusetts State Police, arrested Jose Luis Arias, 29, of Jamaica Plain, and Wilken Ariaz-Baez, 24, at about 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday soon after they arrived on the boat and climbed into a taxicab.
