Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

Like traffic lights and fast food restaurants, taxi cab meters have traditionally been a verboten topic on the Vineyard.

But following a string of complaints this summer about taxi companies overcharging customers, selectmen from all six Island towns have now agreed on the need for uniform taxi regulations.

The problem was a topic for discussion during last week’s meeting of the all-Island selectmen. Uniform rates and meters were both discussed, a review of the videotape of the meeting shows.

The warrant for next week’s special town meeting in Oak Bluffs contains only seven articles, but the issues it will decide are critical to the town’s future.

When voters gather on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Oak Bluffs School they will decide whether the town should cut $500,000 from the current operating budget and then spend $2.44 million to expand the town sewer system in order to tie in the regional high school and new YMCA building, among others.

To dredge or not to dredge? That is the question currently being bandied about in West Tisbury.

A specially-appointed research committee has split over whether to dredge Mill Pond, the historic man-made pond that graces the entrance to town on the Edgartown-West Tisbury Road adjacent to the police station. Two of the committee members, Bob Woodruff and Craig Saunders, believe that dredging is necessary to prevent the pond from drying up and disappearing forever.

At first glance, the recently completed new home at 15 Green avenue in Oak Bluffs looks like many others you might find in this quiet and scenic East Chop neighborhood.

It has a wraparound porch, a perfectly manicured lawn, an outdoor shower and plenty of space; there is a large kitchen and five spacious bedrooms, not counting the open third floor that would be perfect for bunk beds or a pool table.

But look closer and you will find this isn’t your average three-story, three-and-a-half-bath Vineyard dream house.
