Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

Plans were unveiled this week for a new leaching field near the wastewater treatment plant off Pennsylvania avenue in Oak Bluffs. Plans for the site, known as the Leonardo property, call for two open sand pits to be built approximately 160 feet wide by 160 feet long.

Drawn by environmental engineers Stearns and Wheleer, the plans show two separate leaching beds with a four-foot wide gravel walkway in between surrounded by a chain-link fence. Treated effluent would be pumped directly from the wastewater treatment plant.

The Oak Bluffs Monster Shark tournament resumes this weekend when some of the top fishermen from up and down the East Coast descend on the Island in hopes of landing the prize-winning fish. But with it also comes the return of the debate over the ethical aspects of the event and opposition from several national animal rights groups.

In its early days the shark tournament was a low-key affair, largely viewed as a harmless fishing competition that attracted top fishermen while generating a moderate boost in business for local shops and restaurants.

Several residents of State Road in Tisbury contacted police early Sunday morning to report a disruptive argument between two men that quickly escalated into a physical altercation. Police were alerted to the fracas near the entrance of the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road around 3:20 a.m., and arrived to find two men yelling at each other and one with a bloody nose.

The brawl had slowed traffic and disrupted neighbors, but when police arrived the two men separated and said they were friends. Both said they did not wish to press charges.

Oak Bluffs selectmen tackled a wide range of issues during a busy and lengthy meeting on Tuesday, granting an entertainment license for a downtown restaurant, denying a license for a contractor’s yard at a private residence off Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road and making dozens of appointments to various town boards and committees.

But the meeting was not without controversy, as selectmen clashed over the reappointment of longtime zoning board of appeals member Gail Barmakian.

After a sluggish off-season tied to the sustained national recession and an abysmal June blamed on terrible weather, several real estate professionals this week reported a dramatic spike in weekly rentals just as the weather improved and reports of an August visit from President Obama were revealed.
