Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

 

 

 

An Island man was attacked by two assailants and stabbed in the neck with a putty knife on Main street,Vineyard Haven late Sunday evening.

Tisbury police have arrested two men in connection with the attack.

Roy J. Cavanaugh Jr., 47, was arrested early Monday morning and Richard Abrazinski of Edgartown, also 47, was arrested Wednesday morning.

Both have been charged with assault to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and mayhem.

The lead defendant charged last year in one of the largest drug busts in Island history was sentenced to five years in state prison on Monday by a Dukes County superior court judge.

The sentencing followed a change in plea as part of an agreement with the Cape and Islands district attorney.

Two men accused of attacking and robbing a group of summer visitors this summer on an Oak Bluffs town beach were indicted by a Dukes County grand jury in superior court on Monday.

Trevor Byrn, 18, of Bethel, Conn., was indicted on single counts of armed robbery, assault and battery to cause serious bodily injury and aggravated assault and battery. Alex J. Daignault, 19, also of Bethel, Conn., was indicted on single counts of unarmed robbery and aggravated assault and battery.

Signs of water contamination were all around Oak Bluffs this week.

At the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and Oak Bluffs grammar school, water fountains were covered and written signs warned students not to drink the water.

Vineyard schools superintendent James H. Weiss said an announcement was made over the public address system each day reminding students about the water problem. School kitchens switched to paper plates and poured boiling water over all cooking utensils, pans and plates to kill any bacteria.

Oak Bluffs residents were told not to drink their water late last week after the town water supply, which serves nearly all of the 3,500 people who live there, was found contaminated with coliform bacteria.

The town of Oak Bluffs has made an arrangement with the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) that will allow dredging in Sengekontacket Pond to take place this fall. The town has agreed to pay for an archeological survey of the site.

The dredging project is backed by a joint committee of Oak Bluffs and Edgartown officials who want to see the pond reopened for shellfishing year-round.
