Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

 

 

 

A fuel truck making a delivery to Jim’s Package store in Oak Bluffs on Friday spilled an undetermined amount of gasoline near Nancy’s Restaurant along the harbor. The spill was not reported to town or state officials until three days later.

A wandering domesticated goose that has been a frequent visitor on Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs lately has been rescued and placed in a new home — at least for the time being — with Island naturalist Augustus (Gus) Ben David 2nd at his World of Reptiles and Bird Park in Edgartown.

A flood of foreign workers, a sagging economy and terrible weather have combined to create a turnabout in the Vineyard summer job market: too many workers and not enough work.

Employers across the Island report that they have many job applicants but far fewer jobs to offer this year as they tighten their belts, which includes cutting down on hiring.

Island police had a busy weekend.

Oak Bluffs police responded to 72 calls for service from early Friday morning to late Sunday night and made six arrests.

Just after 7 p.m. on Friday, police responded to a report of a man on County Road seriously bleeding from the head. After speaking with the victim, police learned he had been hit in the head several times with a brick by a man who then fled the scene.

A displaced but friendly goose has become a frequent visitor to downtown Oak Bluffs in recent days, waddling up and down Circuit avenue and charming visitors, shopkeepers and year-round residents alike.

The goose spent much of Friday on Circuit avenue peeking in store windows and mingling with pedestrians, many of whom snapped pictures and walked alongside it.

Despite a clash of personalities and differing ideas about how repairs to the Oak Bluffs waterfront should proceed, improvements are underway at the old Pay Beach and Inkwell Beach along Sea View avenue, including the addition of much-needed sand and a new drainage system for an outfall pipe.
