Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

 

 

 

A proposal to renovate and expand Morning Glory Farm in Edgartown saw strong support during a public hearing last Thursday before the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. The commission is reviewing the plan as a development of regional impact (DRI).

The West Tisbury community preservation committee has asked to see a tape of the annual town meeting last April before voting on a recent request from the Island Affordable Housing Fund to release $50,000 from a restricted account. The housing fund, whose financial troubles have come into the public spotlight in recent months, wants to use the money for the 250 State Road affordable housing project.

Despite ongoing protests from a handful of small farmers, the Martha’s Vineyard Commission last Thursday continued on its path to develop regulations for wind turbines at sea and on land, voting to designate a sweeping land-based district of critical planning concern (DCPC) for airspace over the Island.

The vote was 12-0; it follows a vote by the commission six weeks ago to create a wind DCPC over the waters around the Island.

The Martha’s Vineyard Drug Task Force and Oak Bluffs police arrested five people last week on a series of drug charges, including heroin and cocaine trafficking.

On Tuesday the task force executed a search warrant at a house on Lyme street in Oak Bluffs following a nearly four-month investigation. Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, Massachusetts state police and members of the drug task force assisted with the investigation and arrests.

Amid ongoing questions about transparency and possible conflicts of interest among its board members, the Island Housing Trust on Saturday agreed to draft new selection criteria for all future affordable projects, in the process throwing out a pair of bids for the design phase of the Lake street affordable housing plan in Vineyard Haven.
