Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

The Martha’s Vineyard Commission last Thursday unanimously approved a proposal to renovate and expand Morning Glory Farm in Edgartown, which was under review as a development of regional impact (DRI).

The plan was reviewed by the commission’s land use planning committee last Monday and approved by the full commission last Thursday after 30 minutes of deliberation.

The plan now goes before the Edgartown planning board for review at the local level.

Oak Bluffs selectman Kerry Scott announced on Tuesday that she will not run for a third term in April.

“I have done a lot of thinking and soul-searching and have decided I will not run for reelection as selectman this spring . . . it certainly has been a privilege to serve the past six years . . . I would like to thank the people of Oak Bluffs for this opportunity,” Ms. Scott said, reading from a prepared statement.

Spokesmen for the Island Housing Trust found themselves on the hot seat Monday when they appeared before the West Tisbury planning board to ask for an amendment to a special permit for the eight-unit project nearing completion at 250 State Road. Required under bank lending rules, the amendment adds language that will allow the homes to be sold at market rates if they ever go into foreclosure.

After a specially appointed Mill Pond research committee clashed over the best plan to improve water quality in the pond — causing committee member Kent Healy to abruptly resign — the committee has been reorganized and expanded and will begin to meet again in the coming weeks.

Selectmen over the past two weeks appointed a pair of members to the committee, expanding it from three members to five. Last week the selectmen voted unanimously to appoint Anna Alley to the committee; this week they voted to add Rick Karney to the panel, again without dissent.

After a string of frustrating seasons, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School girls’ basketball team has jumped out to an impressive 5-2 record early this season, and could easily be 7-0 if not for a pair of tough overtime losses.

Meanwhile the boys’ basketball team continued to roll this week with an easy win over Minuteman Tech, while the boys’ hockey team lost to perennial powerhouse Framingham on Saturday and Bridgewater-Raynham on Wednesday.
