Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

The plan to build a distributed antennae system (DAS) to boost cell phone coverage in the three up-Island towns appears to be moving ahead without West Tisbury, after the town zoning board ruled that the American Tower Company must apply for 23 individual permits to use utility poles around town.

Selectmen in Chilmark and Aquinnah already have voted to sign contracts with American Tower.

Aquinnah selectman Camille Rose said she was disappointed West Tisbury will not be included in the DAS plan.

It was the first day of March on the Vineyard; snowflakes cut through the air and the busier days of the summer seemed an eternity away. Main street Vineyard Haven was a ghost town, as a handful of shoppers shuffled in and out of stores.

But tucked inside the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Spring street, a small group of people was busy tackling the pressing issues of the day: unemployment, homelessness and the ongoing financial struggles of the Island Affordable Housing Fund.

The dream season for the the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys’ basketball came to end earlier today, as the Vineyarders lost a hard-fought and high-scoring thriller at Wareham by a final score of 92-75 in the second round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Assocation tournament.

With the loss, the Vineyarders finish the season with a stellar record of 16-4; earlier this week they defeated Rockland at home in the first round of the tournament.

The town election season this year will feature contested races for selectmen in Oak Bluffs and West Tisbury, as a full slate of candidates vie to fill the seats of two outgoing incumbents.

In West Tisbury, selectman Dianne Powers decided not to run again after serving a single term on the three-member board. When reached by phone this week Ms. Powers, also Dukes County register of deeds, offered a simple reason why she was calling it quits after one term. “I need to focus on my work at the registry of deeds,” she said.
