Schools
For the last five years a quiet revolution has been under way in Vineyard schools. It’s taking place in the lunchrooms, where leafy green salads, roasted pumpkin seeds and tacos stuffed with brightly colored peppers from local farms are replacing the more traditional canned corn, tater tots and government surplus fare.
It’s taking place in the school yards, where lush gardens and neatly-turned piles of dark compost can now be found alongside the playgrounds that are trampled by hundreds of young feet at recess every day.
Rain postponed a few home games this week, but it did not prevent a number of Vineyard successes: the boys’ tennis and sailing teams qualified for the postseason, while track athletes saw individual victories over the weekend.
Of particular note in home games this week is the girls’ lacrosse nightcap tonight against Wayland. Play begins at 6:15 p.m.
Softball also competes at home today, taking on Bishop Stang at 3:15 p.m.

More than a year after adopting new, state-mandated anti-bullying regulations — including a requirement to report all instances of bullying or related behavior — teachers and administrators at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School say they are already seeing positive effects in the school community.
While bullying is a rare occurrence, school leaders said, students have warmed to the new rules, which have created a more considerate environment at the school and helped quell burgeoning conflicts.
The percussion of daily life for too many Israelis and Palestinians includes the snare of machine gun fire, or the bass of bomb blasts. But Vineyarder Rick Bausman has ventured to the region, first in 2009 and again 2010, with new rhythms to inspire and unite the next generation of Jews, Muslims and Christians. This October he returns for a nine-day drumming bus tour of the region and he wants Islanders to have the first chance to sign up.
Both the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams remain undefeated this season. The boys play two home matches this week, taking on Quaboag Regional on Sunday at 11 a.m. and Coyle and Cassidy Wednesday at 3 p.m. The girls are at home today, playing Barnstable at 4 p.m.
They came, they saw, they did the robot.
A few weeks ago the Martha’s Vineyard Charter school entered the annual Botball championships held at the University of Massachusetts Lowell Costello gym. And they kicked some metallic butt.
