A new law that keeps police logs sealed in domestic violence cases has the strong backing of Island police and social service leaders who work as victim advocates. But free speech advocates worry that the law poses a threat to the public’s right to know.

When Zachary Townes becomes a full-time police officer in Edgartown next year, pending completion of the police academy, it won’t be his first paycheck from the town. Far from it. Mr. Townes, 29, has worked for the town for 13 years.

Edgartown fire personnel quickly extinguished an early afternoon house fire on Dunes Road in Katama that was likely caused by mulch, according to the fire chief. There was nobody at the home at the time of the fire.
