The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard has one cat available for adoption this week. Owl is a lovely white seven-plus-year-old spayed Persian. She’s very gentle and a bit shy, needs a soft lap and someone to cuddle with. Please come to the shelter to see her, Wednesday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The shelter needs volunteers! Call 508-627-8662.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. select the freshest produce, gather prepared delicacies, sample local cheeses, grab Island-made biscuits for your dog — it’s all there on Tuesdays at 144 Beach Road.

Senior Environment Corps of Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, in partnership with the Audubon Society’s Felix Neck and the town of Oak Bluffs is offering a number of summer environmental projects, including bird and species surveys, butterfly garden maintenance, horseshoe crab census,. Two regional magazines, Yankee and Cape Cod Life, have selected Stina Sayre of Vineyard Haven for special tribute to her European-style clothing designs in their current summer issues. Yankee gave its Editor’s Choice Award to Stina Sayre Design for “best couture for aspirational shoppers.” Cape Cod Life named Stina Sayre Design a Martha’s Vineyard Gold Winner for best women’s clothing.

Sam Bungey has been named online editor for the Vineyard Gazette, newspaper editor Julia Wells announced this week. Mr. Bungey grew up in London and graduated from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland in 2003. After university he launched Mongrel, a monthly youth-culture magazine that he ran for four years. Published in Dublin, the magazine was circulated nationwide.

He began working as a reporter for the Gazette in September of 2007. The nephew of Geraldine Brooks and Tony Horwitz of Vineyard Haven, he lives in Chilmark.

Trainer of the Year

Mark McCarthy, son of Mabel and the late Daniel McCarthy of Oak Bluffs and a graduate of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, was recently recognized by the Connecticut Athletic Trainers’ Association as athletic trainer of the year.

The honor recognizes his commitment and dedication to the treatment and management of sports concussions.
