Committee Plans Refurbishment at Old Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs

As a familiar stretch of Oak Bluffs waterfront continues its winter hibernation, the sand unblemished by human footprints or children's sand castles, plans are underway to breathe new life into what was once one of the busiest beaches on the Island.

 

 

 

The new Martha’s Vineyard Hospital was expected to receive approval for a temporary parking plan last night from the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, clearing the way for the Oak Bluffs building inspector to issue a certificate of occupancy and employees and patients to begin using the $48 million, 90,000-square-foot facility on Eastville avenue.

West Tisbury selectmen on Wednesday approved a new policy for the police department’s use of nonlethal weapons, gave the roads and byways committee a green light to nominate two ancient ways as districts of critical planning concern (DCPCs) and again debated who should sit on a police headquarters study committee.

The topic of the study committee has been a sticky one.

After nearly 18 months of struggles and setbacks, the town of Oak Bluffs this week received final approval from the Army Corps of Engineers to dredge Sengekontacket Pond, in a project that many view as vital to protecting the health of the pond.

“Feast your eyes on this document,” declared Oak Bluffs selectman Duncan Ross on Tuesday night, holding a stack of papers over his head. “It is finally here. This is the permit to dredge Sengekontacket.”

Amid ongoing financial problems in Oak Bluffs, a group of town business leaders has proposed moving the police department from its current headquarters on the corner of Ocean and Lake avenues so the building can be rented out to a retail operation.

At the selectmen’s meeting last week, members of the community development committee pitched the idea as a way to generate revenue for the town. The community development committee is appointed by the selectmen and charged with promoting economic development.

New charges of rape and abuse have been brought against Vineyard Haven resident Peter Duart, who was indicted by a grand jury last month for sexual assault on a mentally challenged person.

Mr. Duart, 42, was arraigned in Edgartown district court on Friday on charges of rape and indecent assault. He has been held in the Dukes County Jail since March following his arrest on charges of rape and indecent assault and battery on a retarded person. The term retarded is used in the criminal statute.
