New charges of rape and abuse have been brought against Vineyard Haven resident Peter Duart, who was indicted by a grand jury last month for sexual assault on a mentally challenged person.

Mr. Duart, 42, was arraigned in Edgartown district court on Friday on charges of rape and indecent assault. He has been held in the Dukes County Jail since March following his arrest on charges of rape and indecent assault and battery on a retarded person. The term retarded is used in the criminal statute.

Sandy Mincone, athletic director for the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, announced this week she will step down at the end of the current school year.

Ms. Mincone, who was appointed athletic director in August for a one-year period, is leaving the position to move off-Island. She said her decision came after much thought and consideration.

“I will miss the job and the people I have had the pleasure to work with,” she said. “I wish I could pick the school up and take it with me, but of course I can’t.”

Wednesday’s meeting of Vineyard Power, a fledgling cooperative formed just last year to chart a stable energy future for the Island, took place just hours after U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar gave final approval of Cape Wind.

Leaders of the group unveiled preliminary plans for a Vineyard-owned wind farm.
