Bureaucratic black holes, poor communication and a lack of tact that borders on comedic are to blame for a series of recent misunderstandings between the Aquinnah town government and the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah).
The first fiasco began in late July when building inspector Jerry Wiener sent a letter tribal chairman Cheryl Andrews-Maltais citing the tribe for violating town zoning laws and the state building code on three building projects.
Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School director Bob Moore had spent the past couple of weeks thinking about what he would say to inspire students on the first day of the new school year.
Then, yesterday morning, he found a nine-year-old student had said it better. So he read Susa Breese’s letter to the several hundred students, parents and faculty, who stood and sat around him.

After speculation and rumors bubbled through the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association in Oak Bluffs all summer about renovation work on the historic cottage at 5 Pease avenue, the facts surrounding the construction project began to surface this week.
What began as minor renovations to the cottage in the Camp Ground grew this spring, and a large portion of the building was demolished while the footprint was partially expanded, possibly in violation of a town bylaw that strictly regulates demolition.
Crop Walk Meeting
On Sunday, Sept. 7 at Grace Church at 5 p.m. there will be an organizational meeting for anyone interested in participating in or contributing to the annual Crop Walk of Martha’s Vineyard. Guest speaker will be Bert Marshall, executive director of the Northern New England Church World Service. Details of the walk, planned for Oct. 19, will be discussed. Information, posters, and other literature will be available.
Land Bank Input
The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank will conduct a public input session at 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, in the meeting room of the Vineyard Transit Authority office, located in the airport business park. The purpose of the session is to solicit public comment on future land acquisition priorities and any other matters which the public may wish to discuss.
