The fish arrived slowly at the weigh station on the opening day of the 63rd annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. And when they did begin to show up, they were carried by top derby anglers.

William Pate, 34, of West Tisbury walked into the weigh station at 8:02 a.m. carrying a 7.54-pound bluefish that he had caught at 2 a.m. in the morning. Asked where he caught the fish, his answer was quick. “State forest,” he said.

Another chapter was added last week to the long saga over the illegal three-story garage built by Oak Bluffs resident Joseph Moujabber without a permit along the North Bluff.

After three meetings and a detailed site visit to the garage and several neighboring homes the Copeland Plan district review board on Thursday approved a modified plan calling for the structure to be torn down and replaced by a new addition on the rear of Mr. Moujabber’s existing home on Sea View avenue extension.

It rained in Vineyard Haven and in Oak Bluffs on Saturday. But in Edgartown the skies held out for a 1 p.m. service at the Edgartown Lighthouse. More than 60 people came together at the foot of the beacon, under dark and threatening skies for the Children’s Memorial, a remembrance. They came to hear stories, music and commemorate a lost child in their lives.

On the eve of the start of the 63rd annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby a cadre of friends gathered to celebrate a derby birthday. Don Mohr, 85, of West Tisbury, was honored by his friends and wife at a party at his home on Otis Bassett Road.

Their fish lines not yet in the water, derby anglers gathered for sandwiches and beverages and to share stories with Mr. Mohr, who was chairman of the derby from 1989 to 1991 and derby committee member from 1984 to 1991.

Voter confusion at the Nantucket ballot box changed the result of Tuesday’s Democratic primary for Cape and Islands state representative, according to the town clerk who managed vote counting where write-in candidate Tim Madden secured 52 per cent of the vote.

Mr. Madden ultimately lost to Vineyard candidate Daniel Larkosh, the West Tisbury attorney who won the nomination for the district that spans the Vineyard, Nantucket and Falmouth.
