After losing $135,000 during a year of staff changes in 2007, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum announced last month that it is back in the black, thanks to an individual contribution from an anonymous donor.
Now with six successful grants obtained, including two from the prestigious, peer-reviewed National Endowment for the Humanities, the museum appears to have hit a purple patch.

The artwork of Renée George O’Sullivan is timeless. Her watercolors depict the Vineyard as it is today, even though the paintings were done years ago. Her cartoons that have appeared in publications for generations still tickle the ribs, despite the fact that humor has changed so much over the years.
Ms. O’Sullivan is having an exhibition this week at the Old Sculpin Gallery on Dock street in Edgartown. Her opening was last Sunday and the work will come down in two days.
Art DeLorenzo of Vineyard Haven received the Castleton State College alumni association’s outstanding alumni award at the college’s convocation ceremony, August 28.
Mr. DeLorenzo was recognized for his strong support of Castleton, including his work on the Alumni Association Board as a member and a past president and his contributions to the college’s emerging leaders program. He mentored a group of more than 15 students over the course of four years, concluding in his keynote address at the 2005 commencement.
