Revised Yellow House Plan Attracts Lone Bid
A sole applicant is in the running in Edgartown’s second search for someone to lease and renovate the Yellow House.
The Edgartown community preservation committee approved several applications for community preservation funds during a hearing last week, with one blockbuster item: a $700,500 renovation of town hall.
With the committee’s recommendation, the proposed projects will be vetted by town counsel, to make sure they legally qualify for funding, and then go to town meeting for approval.
Edgartown has named its first poet laureate, with the title bestowed upon Steve Ewing at the board of selectmen’s meeting Monday. According to the selectmen, Mr. Ewing’s primary responsibility as poet laureate is to prepare and deliver a poem at the annual town meeting.
Mr. Ewing’s only objection was to the title. “I don’t know what to say,” he told the selectmen. “I’m really honored. Poet laureate is kind of a fancy term . . . I’m just a local kid who likes to write.”

The board of the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust has voted to explore the acquisition of the building that now houses the Edgartown library.
Chris Scott, executive director of the preservation trust, said the board voted unanimously at its meeting Friday, Dec. 9, to accept the library design committee’s invitation to play a role in deciding the fate of the library, a historic building that was financed by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.
Like most visitors to Martha’s Vineyard Chowder Company, Buster the black Labrador was hungry for a snack when he bounded through the doors Wednesday afternoon. But instead of ordering at the bar, Buster earned his treats by showing off the skills for which he’s been trained: sniffing out a small bag of marijuana, intentionally hidden in a curtain at the restaurant. The year-old dog planted himself on the floor by the curtain, placed his nose on the drugs and received treats from his handler, Oak Bluffs police officer Jeffrey Trudel.
What Elizabeth Rothwell likes most about her job at the Harbor View Hotel is the variety. “Every day here I’m doing something different,” she said. In her capacity as director of marketing and events, she’s seen the hotel staff win first prize in the Edgartown Christmas parade for a float with a large wooden replica of the Edgartown lighthouse, and helped plan a bevy of Christmas events at the hotel during the Christmas in Edgartown weekend.
New Year’s fireworks are coming to Edgartown. On Monday the town selectmen unanimously approved the Harbor View Hotel’s proposal to put on a fireworks show in the Edgartown Harbor to usher in the new year.
Representatives from the hotel said they are staging the midnight show for the benefit of the community, and the hotel is working with the Edgartown police and fire departments to sort out logistics for the display.
