Catch of the Day
Freshwater fishermen on the Vineyard who are interested in learning the mercury content of their catch are asked to call Alanna Purdy at 914-400-9241 to arrange for pickup and free analysis. The project is being sponsored by the Natural Resources Department of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah).
Ladybug Retreats Hosts
August Event for Women
Ladybug Retreats will host its first event on Thursday, August 28 at the Mansion House in Vineyard Haven. The seminar is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and costs $40.
Ladybug Retreat is a personal development and growth company dedicated to enhancing and empowering people, especially women, by delivering programs that focus on self-care and awareness. The founder of Ladybug’s various enterprises, Cynthia Mullins, is a weekend resident of the Vineyard.
Tennis Player Honored
Ralph Stuart of Brookline and West Tisbury, has been inducted into the United States Tennis Association New England Hall of Fame.
Mr. Stuart is part of a short list of players who have enjoyed top-two rankings in four consecutive decades. Stuart was No. 2 in New England’s 18-and-under group in 1952. In 1969, he was No. 2 in the junior veterans category. In 1975, Stuart soared to the No. 1 spot in the 45s. Stuart was the second-ranked player in the 50s division in 1986.

The days this summer for eating locally caught fluke on the Vineyard are coming to a close.
Fluke, also called summer flounder, are a flat fish. Their fillets are white and tasty, and most come from Vineyard Sound. Since the start of the summer, fluke have been the catch of the day.
On Tuesday, the state closed the commercial season for landing fluke, based on projected estimates that the state quota had been met.
The Farm Neck Golf Club in Oak Bluffs will bring back the dynamic Jensen brothers, Murphy and Luke, for the third annual Martha’s Vineyard Tennis Open benefit on August 22 and 23.
The brothers, formerly French Open doubles champions, will play with the lucky bidders in a pro-am competition on Saturday and also run the popular tennis clinics. The entire weekend proceeds are going to benefit the Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group, a nonprofit organization that offers financial aide and support to Islanders in need with cancer.
Ocean Eversley of Oak Bluffs competed on July 27 at the New England Masters Track and Field Championships held in Springfield. Ms. Eversley competed in the 1500, 800 and 200-meter races all on the same day.She took first place in all three events, bringing three gold medals back to the Vineyard.
Ms. Eversley next plans to compete in the Chilmark Road Race tomorrow, and then will participate in the North American and World Track and Field Championships being held in Florida at the end of August.
