Sports
Sailing already is getting under way this summer.
The Vineyard Haven Yacht Club is observing its 80th summer. The Edgartown Yacht Club is hosting more summer sailing events than it did a year ago. Sail Martha’s Vineyard is gearing up for its big sailing classic Vineyard Cup in mid-July. The Holmes Hole Sailing Association has launched its Sunday and Thursday races.
Across the Island’s harbors, the boats are here. Plenty more are coming. The talk at yacht clubs is about events, wind, markers, crew and gear.
The Vineyard sent three youth soccer teams to the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions in Lancaster this past weekend and had one team — the boys’ 11-and-under squad — qualify for the championship game by winning three grueling preliminary games against some of the toughest teams in the state.
Tennis Center Change
Ken Martin, co-founder of the Vineyard Tennis Center, Workout and Spa, is stepping aside in the coming weeks after a 12-year partnership with Connie McHugh. Ms. McHugh will then assume full ownership.
Mr. Martin designed and has maintained the tennis and health club facility since 1996. His vision and direction have resulted in the club receiving the “Best of the Vineyard” award for four consecutive years.
He will continue to be an active tennis player and fitness member.

Recreational anglers are seeing the best fishing for early summer. Water temperatures remain on the cool side, so stripers and bluefish are still within reach for shoreside angling. Doug Asselin at Dick’s Bait and Tackle Shop, a store in Oak Bluffs, said bluefish were caught during the day at the beach at Right Fork in Katama. This creates a little bit of a challenge, since the swimming season has started.
Disability Services Program
Adds Activity Coordinator
Martha’s Vineyard Community Services is adding an activity and volunteer coordinator position that would address the need for enhanced services to older adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities.
The coordinator will plan and implement social outings and recreational activities for the target population. A pool of qualified volunteers will be recruited and trained to assist on outings.
The state Division of Marine Fisheries yesterday expanded closed shellfish areas to include the eastern side of Nantucket Sound due to red tide. The closure does not affect fish or shellfish harvested and landed in Vineyard waters.
The agency sent out the notification for the benefit of shellfishermen and fish markets that sell shellfish wholesale and retail. Affected shellfish include surf clams, ocean quahaugs, mussels, carnivorous snails and whole sea scallops. Those scallops are exempt if only the adductor muscle is landed.
