The fishermen will begin lining up with their fish well before the 8 a.m. Sunday opening of the weigh station at the foot of Main street in Edgartown. Many of the anglers will be sleep deprived, having not slept but a few hours overnight.
The 31st running of the George Moffett Race sponsored by the Holmes Hole Sailing Association took place on Saturday, Sept. 6, with the start and finish off East Chop in Vineyard Haven harbor.
The Holmes Hole Sailing Association concluded its summer season of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven harbor with a Thursday night race on August 28 and two harbor races on August 31.
Jonathan Cristea of Edgartown captured the small caliber division of the annual Martha’s Vineyard Pistol Championships held on Sunday, Sept. 8 with a score of 270 out of 400, while brother Joel captured the large bore caliber division with a score of 340 in that class. Competitors had to fire from different distances, positions and time limitations.
The Class B title in the small bore went to Andy Braillard with Peter Herrmann picking up the Class C title. The large caliber Class B title went to Bill Shanok as Andy Braillard collected the Class C title.

Friday Conversations at the Oak Bluffs Senior Center continue from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
On Friday Sept. 12, the speaker will be Nancy Francis of Life-Line Screening. She will talk about stroke prevention. She will be accompanied by Nicole Barlett, Vineyard Nursing Association public health nurse for five Island towns.
The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter is organizing a number of CPR, AED and First Aid classes in September for residents of Martha’s Vineyard. All classes will be held at the YMCA, 57 Pequot avenue in Oak Bluffs.
An adult CPR/AED class will be held on Sept. 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or Sept. 29 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The cost for the course is $50.
An Adult CPR/AED and First Aid class will be held on Sept. 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost for the class is $60.
