Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard is sponsoring a forum ­— An Insiders’ Guide to Hospice: What’s Old, What’s New, What’s Up ­— on Tuesday, August 4, at 5 p.m. Featured will be Dr. Donald Schumacher, chief executive of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in Washington, D.C.

The forum is free and open to the public. It will be held at the First Congregational Church in West Tisbury at State Road and Music street. Refreshments will follow.

Island golfer Tony Grillo shot a one-under par on Thursday at a qualifying event at Maplegate Country Club in Bellingham to take third place in the field and earn a spot in the U.S. Amateur Open, the leading annual golf tournament for amateur golfers that has been won by golfing legends like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jack Nicklaus.

Andrew McHugh of Edgartown (center), Reid Yennie and Justice Yennie of West Tisbury all took first place in their divisions at the Bay State Games at Harvard recently. Andrew took first place in the boys’ singles tennis 18 and under division, Reid took first place in the boys’ 14 and under singles, and Justice took first place in the 12 and under singles. Andrew and Reid also took home a bronze in the boys’ 18 and under doubles, while Justice and his partner walked away with a gold in the 12 and under doubles.

Quite a few of the fishermen boarding the party fishing boat Skipper in Oak Bluffs on Wednesday morning before 8 a.m. were repeat customers. They toted their own coolers loaded with refreshments, and towels for keeping their hands clean.

This weekend Dr. Richard Brown, an associate professor in clinical psychology at Columbia University, will visit the Yoga Barn in West Tisbury, to teach breathing techniques that help allay anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, depression and other maladies.

Dr. Brown’s work draws on the traditions of both ancient and modern mind-body techniques.

Fishing season has finally hit its stride. And if they can keep from getting lost in the fog, anglers are finding dinner. There are reports of bonito. Striped bass are still around, although in deeper water. Somebody caught a nice bluefish in Nantucket Sound on Wednesday morning. Someone else was seen toting five gallon buckets full of black sea bass.
