Bait fish that were once plentiful in the waters around the Cape and Islands have grown scarce. And recreational fishermen want Congress to step in to help do something about it.
Menhaden, also called bunker, have all but disappeared. Atlantic mackerel had a weak showing this spring. Even squid are down; the commonwealth has extended the spring fishing season into June to help commercial draggers meet the state quota, but the bigger question is what happened to the squid?
As New England fisheries officials negotiate the finer points of a new groundfish management plan, Massachusetts voters appear firmly behind proposals to change the days-at-sea regulation scheme to one that uses community-based, fishermen-run cooperatives to monitor and limit cod, flounder and haddock fishing.
The regional high school boys’ tennis team fought valiantly on Wednesday in the second round of the Division 3 state tournament against number three seed Dover-Sherborn, but in the end fell to the defending South Sectional champions 4-1.
Despite the loss the Vineyard boys had a remarkable season, going 15-5 overall and advancing to the semifinals of the state tournament for the first time. Dover-Sherborn improved to 16-1 with the win.

Fewer fish were caught and released in the 18th annual Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club’s flyrod striped bass catch and release tournament last weekend than in the previous year’s contest. It may be the first time the number of fish caught and released was less than the number of anglers who entered the contest. There were a total of 146 striped bass and 193 flyfishermen.
Cape Cod Baseball League to Play On Island
This Tuesday, June 9, two franchises of the famous Cape Cod Baseball League will go head to head on Vineyard soil when the Falmouth Commodores play host the Wareham Gatemen at the Vineyard Baseball Park at the high school at 1 p.m. An autograph session will follow the game. Capping off a stellar season, Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School senior Mark Reppert captured the 800-metre run at the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 3 Track and Field Outdoor Championships held on Sunday at Ipswich High School.
The Vineyard girls’ track team finished 17th overall, while the boys’ team finished 20th.
