CPR and First Aid Class

The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands chapter, will be holding an Adult CPR/AED and First Aid class on Oct. 10 at the YMCA at 57 Pequot avenue in Oaks Bluffs, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It costs $50 for CPR/AED or $60 for CPR/AED and First Aid.

It was an overtime thriller for the high school football team this week in its inaugural game in the Eastern Athletic Conference, while the field hockey battled both opponents and illness.

After winning by forfeit last week against Charlestown, the football team was eager to take to the gridiron at home this week against Coyle-Cassidy in what proved to be an exciting contest that went down to the wire on Friday night under the lights.

The American Red Cross will offer free volunteer classes at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School beginning Oct. 6 and running through Nov. 7.

After the training, volunteers become Red Cross certified, and with some experience can be deployed locally and nationally. The class is open to anyone 17 years and older who would like to become a Red Cross disaster action team member. There are no other prerequisites and all classes are free.

Weakfish, also known as squeteague, were once common in this region, so popular a sport fish that up until 1987, they were part of the annual fall Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. Then they disappeared from these waters. They were removed from the derby after not one was caught in 1987.

The largest false albacore caught from the shore was landed last Saturday. Keith A. McArt of Somerville, a well-respected derby fisherman, caught a 16.55-pound false albacore while fishing off Lobsterville Beach. Quite a few fishermen saw him land the fish.

The 64th annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby is now entering its third week with still two weeks to go.

After losing their season opener, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School field hockey team went on a hot streak this past week, winning two games in impressive fashion while tying two others, including a stalemate against Division I powerhouse Somerset, widely considered to be one of the strongest teams on the Vineyard’s schedule this year.

Coach Lisa Knight is ecstatic about her team’s performance. After a frustrating loss to Sandwich in the opener, team members were eager to get back on the field and prove themselves.
