Golf Scramble

The 21st annual Howard W. Leonard golf scramble to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Martha’s Vineyard took place on Sunday, Sept. 20. The Martha’s Savings Bank and Mink Meadows Golf Club sponsored the event. Beautiful weather contributed to the fantastic spirit of the day as 36 golfers took to the Mink Meadows course following coffee and breakfast foods provided by the Black Dog Cafe.

Because shipments of seasonal influenza vaccine will arrive on the Vineyard later than expected, the annual Islandwide innoculation will be postponed until the second week of November.

Seasonal flu innoculation is now scheduled to take place at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School on Nov. 11.

You can call it the only kids’ saltwater multispecies fishing tournament on the Vineyard. Very early Sunday morning, anglers from around the Island, all under 15, went fishing at the Oak Bluffs Steamship Authority wharf. They caught lots of fish: bluefish, scup, black sea bass, skate and summer flounder (fluke). They kept nothing; the tournament is catch and release.

But there were plenty of prizes to go around. Close to 200 anglers (not all of them were children) participated. And most caught fish.

The largest false albacore caught from the shore was landed last Saturday. Keith A. McArt of Somerville, a well-respected derby fisherman, caught a 16.55-pound false albacore while fishing off Lobsterville Beach. Quite a few fishermen saw him land the fish.

The 64th annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby is now entering its third week with still two weeks to go.
