The annual Martha’s Vineyard Wind Festival is blowing into Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs on Saturday, October 12. Wind power will set kites to flying, frisbees to sailing and boats to floating as folks gather at the park. A free kite-making session for children is from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with flying competitions beginning at noon.

Teens can compete from 1 to 2 p.m. and the adult competition is from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be frisbee games throughout the afternoon and model sailboat races for children are planned.

Youth Tennis Roof Raising

The Vineyard Youth Tennis program is raising the bubble roof on Saturday, Oct. 19, to prepare for the winter tennis season. The bubble raising begins at 8:30 a.m. and 30 people are needed to help with the project. All classes except for the tournament team will be cancelled that day.

If you can’t raise the roof but would like to help, drop off snacks or drinks for the volunteers.

Vineyard House invites all to its 24th Annual Columbus Day 5K Road Race and 1 Mile Fun Run on Sunday, Oct. 13. The race begins at 10:30 at Ocean Park in Oak Bluffs, continues along New York avenue, to the East Chop bluffs and back to the finish line in front of the Wesley House Hotel.

If you want to play pickup soccer all you need is a ball and a field. If you want to play pickup cricket you need a bit more. A tennis ball (or four, in case one bounces away) will do in place of the hard leather ball typically used in games. Wooden spikes will do for wickets, and sticks with blue surveyors’ tape on them work for denoting the outfield boundaries.
