This weekend, at the annual alumni hockey games, it was once again time for the old (and not so old) guard to dust off their skates and once again hit the ice at the Martha's Vineyard Arena.
In his op-ed Conservation is Essential to Save the Striper (Vineyard Gazette, Oct. 31), author Dick Russell suggests that recreational and commercial fishermen stand at odds when it comes to striped bass conservation. He claims that commercial striped bass fishermen from Massachusetts and menhaden fishermen from Virginia are obstacles in the way of stronger protections for striped bass.
Giving back to the community has long been a staple of the boys’ hockey program. This year the team is taking its yearly service project to a national level.
The team plans to raise at least $5,000 this season to donate to the Wounded Warrior Project. They are also hosting a military appreciation weekend in February during the annual Fairleigh Dickinson Tournament, held during the weekend of Feb. 15-16. Players will be wearing a special jersey in honor of the weekend tournament, which is a public event.
After a shaky start against Sandwich last week, the boys’ varsity basketball team picked up a decisive 69-41 victory over visiting Dennis-Yarmouth Tuesday evening in their home opener.
After all that celebrating, start off the new year with a walk at the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary in Edgartown.
The day after Christmas can also be a day to de-clutter and renew by bringing boxes of clothes or extra gifts to the Yoga Collective at Island Cohousing on Rock Pond Road in West Tisbury.
