A West Tisbury man is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after allegedly hitting a police officer with his car when the officer tried to stop him for a drug investigation.

Asa W. French, 27, of West Tisbury, was arraigned March 4 in Edgartown district court on a March 2 charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (a motor vehicle).

Parts of the Island were without power Sunday afternoon after police said a car hit a guide wire on a utility pole.

State police Trooper Robert Branca said the car’s driver, Wilbur Dean, 70, of West Tisbury, was taken to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital as a precaution after he apparently blacked out and crossed the road on the south side of State Road near the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Mae Fane property.

The Martha’s Vineyard Drug Task Force arrested two Brockton men Wednesday on charges relating to heroin distribution, with police saying the Island is a lucrative market for the drug. Edgartown police are issuing a criminal complaint summons for a man who was allegedly growing marijuana in his Twentieth street home, an early test of the state’s recently approved medical marijuana law.

While responding to a reported theft at Keith Bassett’s apartment on Jan. 27, Edgartown police allegedly found a marijuana grow room.

According to a police report by Det. Sgt. Christopher Dolby, the room allegedly contained about 12 marijuana plants, each three feet tall, and the room had lights “and other equipment designed to cultivate marijuana.”
