Forty years after its release, Jaws remains a treasured part of Island history. A look back on the summer Hollywood filmmakers descended on the Island and struggled against all odds to make a realistic-looking movie about a giant shark with a taste for human flesh.
The Strand movie theatre in Oak Bluffs, shuttered since 2011, will have its grand reopening this weekend. On Friday night there will be an invitation-only event; Saturday night the Strand will open to the public with two film showings.
The third annual Film and Music Festival at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center runs from Thursday, June 25, through Sunday, June 28.
The scene at the opening gala on Friday night was in many respects back to the way it used to be: a crowd filling the seats, popcorn popping in the lobby and a film on the big screen. The Capawock opens to the public Saturday evening.
This weekend the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society will host screenings of films by Jacques Perrin, the Oscar-winning producer, actor, director and member of France’s Legion of Honor. Mr. Perrin will travel from France to attend the festival.
The first annual Environmental Film Festival will be held at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center from May 20 through May 24.
