Flyfishing Classes

In his memoir, A River Runs Through It, Norman Maclean introduced many readers to the art of flyfishing. The movie of that memoir, featuring Brad Pitt in perhaps his most golden boy moment, gathered up quite a few more believers. But for those still on the sidelines, worried perhaps about tying themselves up in knots rather than placing the fly just so beside a lily pad or out past the surf, the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club is coming to the rescue.

Next Saturday, May 26, the West Tisbury Church is hosting a tour of several up-Island gardens. All of the gardens are located on private residences and so, ordinarily, remain hidden to all but the birds and hungry rabbits and deer. But for one day the owners of these gardens have agreed to share the natural abundance they have created and tended. The event is a fundraiser for the upkeep of the historic church, itself a thing of aesthetic beauty.

The tour includes five gardens in all.

Preschool Open House

The Chilmark Preschool is hosting an open house on Saturday, May 19, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Meet the teachers, tour the facility, and learn about the curriculum. It’s never too early to start learning calculus, you know.

Actually, the Chilmark Preschool prides itself on a play-based program. It serves children ages 2 years, nine months to 5-years-old, Island-wide. For more details, call 508-645-2562, extension 110.

As erosion inches the Gay Head Lighthouse closer to the edge, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum is moving ahead with a study to assess the urgency of relocating the 156-year-old structure.

The study will take place over the course of three years and provide a “more realistic” prediction of what the long-term needs are for the area, museum director David Nathans said yesterday.

Bellydance Revue

Today, May 11, is all about the bare belly as the Vineyard Bellydance and Revue hits our shores at the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven. The show begins at 7:30 p.m.

On hand will be local shimmyers as well as featured guest dancers from around New England bringing with them dance styles from around the world. In addition, there will be a performance by jazz vocalist, Jerri Wells, who has previously performed with Count Basie in New York city.
