Ice Arena Open Forum
Here are the cold, hard facts – The Martha’s Vineyard Ice Arena plans to expand, and the public is invited to help plan. The Arena, along with Mashek MacLean Architects, will host an open forum at 5:30 p.m. on June 12 at the P.A. Club in Oak Bluffs. Everyone is invited to come and break the ice at the debate table, making suggestions for arena improvements. It will be a place to get in touch with your inner Zamboni — sharing opinions and asking questions to create a smoother ice rink experience.
Vineyard residents pride themselves on being tough. They brave cold, barren winters, prohibitively high gas prices and interminable summer crowds.
But those Islanders battling cancer are among the hardiest. They face high medical costs, uncomfortable ferry rides and long, painful drives to oncologists and radiation centers. Cancer engages them in emotional, physical and financial struggles each day.
Creative Living Nominations
The Permanent Endowment Fund for Martha’s Vineyard is accepting nominations for the 2012 Creative Living Award. The award recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to the Island’s quality of life and embody the spirit of former resident Ruth J. Bogan.

Oliver Filley has spent the last few months of his high school career focused on designing and making kite boards, a course of study that blends his passion with education and his future plans.
Oliver is one of 12 Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School seniors to complete senior projects this year, in which students devote three class blocks during a semester to a project that aligns with their interests. This year, senior projects ranged from art and music to nutrition and agriculture.
The Friends of Family Planning Art Show and sale celebrates its 24th year at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury beginning today, May 25, and running through Sunday, May 27. With about 125 artists exhibiting and over 25 Island eateries donating goods, the art show has become an essential fundraising event for the Island’s family planning clinic.
“For us it’s really crucial,” said board member Jennifer Knight. “It’s what enables us to support the clinic.”
