Card Shark
Geraldine Averill has found a bridge to success. Ms. Averill of Vineyard Haven recently finished first at the Eastern Massachusetts Bridge Association sectional tournament. She won the 299ers pairs event at the fall sectional held in Sandwich.
Melissa Arrives
Silmara Casarin and André Casarin of Edgartown announce the birth of a daughter, Melissa Moura Casarin, born on Nov. 19, 2011, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Melissa weighed 8 pounds at birth.
Ithaca College Honors
Oak Bluffs resident Matthew Fisher was inducted into Ithaca College’s Oracle Honor Society in November. First-year students whose GPA puts them in the top 10 per cent of their school throughout the full academic year are invited into the society.
Pharmacy Student
Daniel Kaeka of West Tisury has been formally welcomed into Western New England University’s inaugural College of Pharmacy class. Western New England University is a private, co-educational institution founded in Springfield in 1919.
Gold Star for Libraries
The Vineyard Haven and West Tisbury libraries have been named “star” libraries in an annual national rating process conducted by the Library Journal. Only eight libraries in Massachusetts and 256 libraries throughout the United States were given the star rating, out of a possible 7,513 libraries.
Married 50 Years
Roy and Jeannie Gionfriddo recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their son, Mark, at their home on Vineyard avenue extension in Oak Bluffs. The Gionfriddos spend part of the year at their home in Holyoke. Their son is head of the jazz department at Mt. Holyoke College.
