West Tisbury animal control officer Joan Jenkinson feeds the Mill Pond birds twice a day. When she noticed that a cygnet had been seriously injured, bitten by a snapping turtle, she took unusual steps to nurse the little swan back to health.

An unlikely location will serve as the backdrop for one episode in a new Discovery Channel TV series set to film on Martha’s Vineyard next month.

In the Chilmark School Thursday morning head of school Susan Stevens stood among parents and grandparents, giving kids high fives. “Welcome back! Glad you’re here!” she said. It was the common refrain as students around the Island headed back to classrooms to begin a new school year.

Classic vintage automobiles, custom trucks and and polished hot rods lined Main street on Sunday for the Tisbury Firefighter Association’s Annual Car Show. The show is in its eighth year and raises money for the fallen firefighter fund.

Public schools open Thursday morning, Sept. 4, in Island public schools. At the regional high school new leadership is the theme this year, beginning with principal Gilbert Traverso. Mr. Traverso brings his open-door policy from Hamden, Conn., where he led a vocational school.
