As of early in the morning on April 2, Chappaquiddick was no longer an island completely separated from Martha’s Vineyard. Nearly eight years after a northeaster cut a breach in the three-mile barrier beach that connects Edgartown with the smaller island, the Norton Point breach had closed.

A 32-year-old man died late Wednesday night in a house fire in Edgartown, according to police, and two other occupants were injured. Police said an investigation has concluded that the fire was started by improper disposal of smoking materials.

Santander Bank will be closing its branch on South Road in Chilmark at the end of May. A spokeswoman for the company told the Gazette Tuesday that the decision to close the up-Island branch came after a regular review of branches and customer patterns.
