This August, the first bottles from Rob Hale's Martha’s Vineyard Cider Co. were delivered to Island restaurants. The inaugural cider is called Hard A Lee, named after a wooden boat that has been in the Hale family, which owns the Martha’s Vineyard Shipyard, for more than 90 years.

Sengekontacket Pond is closed to shellfishing after the heavy rainfall on Thursday, Sept. 10. The pond is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at the earliest.

Katama Bay oyster farms reopened for business Thursday morning after a two-week closure because of Vibrio illness traced to consumption of raw oysters harvested from the water. The 12 aquaculture farms operating on the bay were back up and running early Thursday.

A 21-year-old man turned himself in to police Tuesday after allegedly breaking into Alley’s General Store over the weekend, police said. Police said Geoffrey B. McCullough of Hingham will be charged with breaking and entering, malicious destruction of property and larceny.
