For most Vineyarders, driving off the ferry back onto the Island is a moment filled with excitement or a sigh of relief. But for those returning from detoxification units for alcoholism and addiction it is a time of temptation and anxiety.

In 1910, when the Vineyard was about to get its first A&P grocery store, three independent Vineyard Haven merchants decided to merge as a way to fight this new off-Island threat. Today owner Liz Packer carries on the Yankee tradition at SBS, the grain and dry goods store.

Chilmark voters approved a change to the town line, but not before an amendment was added on the town meeting floor that will keep Aquinnah, the smallest town on the Island, from losing any more land. At stake was 300 feet.
