STAY DRY

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

We are writing to express our strong conviction regarding the so-called beer and wine issue in Vineyard Haven. Our conviction grows out of a good many years of experience and observation in a considerable number of communities where we have been associated.

GOOD DEAL

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

To help quell the groans and moans about the “excessive” fares to and from Chappaquiddick, I wish to provide the following:

• In 1929 it cost a $1 for a round trip.

• Today, it costs $12.

Taking the $1 in 1929 and converting it to 2008 dollars, we would get $24.64. Thank you Peter Wells for helping fight inflation.

DISPIRITING TIMES

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

Jose is a brown and white nine-year-old ox who is looking for a new pet-friendly home. He would be a great companion for other farm animals.

I wrote about him in this newspaper nine years ago, when he was rescued from the fate of being turned into veal. Jose, who is a gentle soul, is currently living at Rainbow Farm but needs to move to a new home.

Can you help? Please call Kathe at 508-360-3710.

CLOSE CALL

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

I’m sitting in my room on this Friday night relaxing, listening to the rain outside. Next thing I know, I hear a sound of a loud revving engine right next to my house, possibly over it. Following the revving sound was a huge bang. I knew for sure that something had just crashed.

My roommate came running out of her room to tell me that a plane had just missed our house!

SACRED COW

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

Reading about Bradley Square brings me back to fairly recent history on Martha’s Vineyard. Remember when the golf wars dominated the headlines, and allegations of conflict of interest assaulted the Martha’s Vineyard Commission and the Island conservation community?

AIRPORT ADVERTISING

Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

The following letter was sent to the Martha’s Vineyard Airport Commission:

The presentation by Luxury Media Partners to place advertising both outside and inside the airport terminal seems to have some merit in that would generate some income for the airport. There are, however, substantial detriments which it appears you have not considered or discussed.
